While the Nolichucky River runs for over 100 miles, there is one stretch of the water close to Erwin that’s perfect for an easy paddle… or even a float!
If you are new to the area, looking for a vacation activity, or inexperienced at paddling, I highly recommend you look into a guide service like Back2Basics Adventures to make your time on the water as enjoyable as possible.
What to Know Before Paddling the Nolichucky River
After you’ve decided paddling the Nolichucky River is going to be a fun activity for your family, take note of a few things before you venture out.
Consider if you need to rent any gear including boats, kayaks, canoes, tubes, life jackets, paddles, etc. While some companies may offer to deliver these items, most of the time you will need to be able to transport this type of gear on your own.
Once you have gear checked off for paddling the Nolichucky River, the next thing to figure out is how you are going to get dropped off and picked up from the river. This is probably the most overlooked aspect of floating or paddling any river because the place you put in (unless you plan to paddle up river) is not the same as where you get out.
Speaking of getting in and out of the river, double check that the location you are putting in and getting out at are actually open to the public and that it is not private property. There are several apps that can help you identify public access points.
Every day can be different when you are on the river so plan accordingly. Bring extra water, drinks, snacks, and any additional supplies you family may need for a full day out. Do also pack a garbage bag so you can remove all of your own trash.
Lastly, remember to slow down and enjoy the sights as you drift down the Nolichucky; the scenery is nothing short of amazing. Take as many breaks as your family needs to do a little swimming or snacking.
